Pregnancy Calendar - Week 1 [ First Trimester ] (counting from the first day of last menstrual period) |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Congratulations, you’ve decided to try to conceive!
Pregnancy is a miraculous time when your body will become a
life-support to a new, fragile little life. Though you are officially pregnant
for 40 weeks, the first two weeks of your "pregnancy" will not actually include
being pregnant. Each pregnancy is measured from the first day of your last
menstrual period, therefore you aren’t technically pregnant for those first two
weeks.

Your last menstrual period (for a while, at least) has just begun. Now is a very good time to prepare your body for the massive task that it is about to undertake. Discontinue use of your birth control pills in order for normal ovulation to occur, begin avoiding alcohol and secondary smoke (give up if you are a smoker yourself) and start taking prenatal vitamins such as Folic Acid - which will help prevent neural tube defects in the foetus. Adequate folic acid intake reduces the risk of neural tube defects (birth defects caused by incomplete development of the brain or spinal cord), such as spina bifida. Be sure to talk to your health care provider about taking a folic acid supplement while you are trying to conceive.
There will be slight differences in everyone's growth and foetal development. Any problems should be reported to your practitioner.
